Some of Benavides’ youngest softball players are making big-time history in their hometown.

Benavides Little League Softball’s 9-10 and 11-year old Major Division all-stars are headed to the Texas West tournament in Abilene next week. They are the first Little League team from Benavides to reach the Texas West state tournament.

The Benavides all-stars are playing in the state tournament in Abilene next Saturday. Coaches are unsure who their first opponent is, but Benavides is scheduled to play at 8 p.m. that day.

Benavides was the only 9-10 and 11-year-old all-star team in District 22, so they advanced directly to sectionals play. They hosted the Section 4 tournament at Yogi Park in Benavides and beat Corpus Christi Laguna twice to win the tournament and advance. Benavides beat Laguna, 27-7, in their first game. They won the second game, 11-0.

Benavides Little League Softball president Mona Rodriguez said the team’s trip to state has the girls and the entire community excited.

“This is the first Benavides team that has ever been to the Little League state tournament,” she said. “Everyone is proud. The girls are like, ‘what are we going to do over there?’ I told them we’re going to play softball.”

Benavides’ girls played regular-season games against Alice and Premont.

The team is coached by Ari Pena, Ana Ortiz, Monica Sendejo and Andrea Elizondo.

Benavides’ roster includes Catarina Cavazos, Lilia Franco, Sienna Pena, Aralyn Ortiz, Monica Sendjo, Shelby Salinas, Natasha Flores, Emily Elizondo, Krysten Garza, Natalie Flores and Arlena Guzman, MaKenzie Saenz and Melody Perez.
