SAN DIEGO — The road to Austin and the UIL Class 3A state softball tournament goes through Sinton, at least for the San Diego Lady Vaqueros and the Santa Gertrudis Academy Pride.

The two South Texas high school softball perennial powerhouses are meeting in Sinton Thursday night in a winner-take-all one-game playoff. Game time is 7 p.m. The winner of the Region IV-3A championship advances to the state tournament next week in Austin.

San Diego beat Schulenberg twice in Victoria Saturday afternoon, 15-4 and 11-10. The Lady Vaqueros entered Saturday in a one-game hole after losing Game 1 of the best-of-three series, 7-3, Thursday night.

Santa Gertrudis reached the regional finals by beating Hallettsville in two games, 3-1 and 5-0.

This is the first time that the Lady Vaqueros reach the regional finals.

In 2016, San Diego and Santa Gertrudis were in the same district. They split games that season, but Academy went on to advance to Austin and play in the Class 3A state title game. Academy lost to West in the state finals, 2-0.

Academy also reached the 3A title game in 2017 and lost to Little River Academy, 5-3.
