The San Diego Lady Vaqueros avoided a third game in their best-of-three bi-district series by shutting down the Mathis Lady Pirates and completing a sweep Friday evening in George West.

The Lady Vaqueros closed the series by winning Game 2, 7-3, Friday night. They won Game 1, 11-1, Thursday night. San Diego now moves on to the Class 3A area round of the state playoffs.

San Diego had 11 hits and committed four errors, but the early runs they scored helped them maintain the lead, even in the seventh inning when the Lady Pirates made a late push. San Diego led, 7-0, in the seventh, but Mathis closed the gap by scoring three in their last at-bat.

Zaliegh Perez led the Lady Vaqueros at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBI. Brianna Munoz was 2-for-4. Leandra Bazan was 2-for-2 with two RBI.

Miranda Buentello was the winning pitcher. She gave up five hits and one walk through seven innings. She struck out five.
