One big inning by the Laredo United Lady Longhorns doomed the Alice Lady Coyotes in their home opener Tuesday evening.

When the dust finally settled after seven innings, the Lady Coyotes were on the wrong end of a 2-0 decision.

The Lady Longhorns put runners on second and third without any outs in the top of the fifth inning. Alice third baseman Sarina Cantu fielded the next ground ball for an out. She then fielded an identical shallow ground ball, but didn’t make the throw on time to first. However, first baseman Hailey Garza made the throw home for the second out.

With two outs, United senior Daniel Castro came through for her team with a line drive off the out-stretched gives of Garza at first. The single scored two runs and put the Lady Longhorns up, 2-0.

The Lady Coyotes had a solid night at the plate with five hits, but they failed to bring around a run. Alice’s best opportunity to scored came with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. Hannah Rodriguez had a ground ball and beat out the throw to first. Sam Hinojosa followed with a base hit. She then took second to put runners at third and second.

United escaped the inning with a called strikeout for the third out.

Sophomore Layla Rodriguez pitched all seven innings for Alice. She surrendered seven hits.

Alice is back on the field at the Border Olympics in Laredo Friday and Saturday.
