The Alice Lady Coyotes had a big day on the diamond Thursday.

The Lady Coyotes picked two wins and a tie in the first day of pool play at the Victoria West tournament. Along the way, the Alice girls scored a total of 32 runs and had 32 hits.

“They did really good,” Alice coach Janay Gonzalez said. “We played a lot of softball, and the girls played well.”

Alice began pool play with a 1-1 tie against Rockport-Fulton. Offensively, the Lady Coyotes had six hits while pitcher Layla Rodriguez managed four strikeouts.

The Lady Coyotes came back and beat Houston Aldine, 16-1, in three innings. Alice had 13 hits and Rodriguez had two strikeouts through three innings.

Alice again had 13 hits in a 15-0 win against West Oso in three innings. Sam Hinojosa was given the win. She struck out four through three innings.

The Lady Coyotes are playing IWA in a non-district game at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Alice High School. The team will board a bus and head to Victoria for a morning game against Sinton in bracket play at the Victoria West tournament Saturday morning.

Including pool play, Alice is 3-0-1 this season.
