Alice High School punter Sean Chapa again won statewide honors Friday on the Texas Sports Writers Association’s Class 5A all-state team.

The Alice junior was named Second Team All-State in Class 5A by the TSWA. Earlier this year, Chapa was named First Team All-State by the Texas Associated Press Sports Editors.

Chapa, who started for the Coyotes at safety, was exceptional during the regular season, and even better in the state playoffs.

During Alice’s 10 regular season games, Chapa had 47 punts with an average of 43.84. He had a better average in the playoffs and had two punts of more than 60 yards.

First-year Alice coach Kyle Atwood said Chapa was easily one of the best and most athletic punters in all of Class 5A.

“Stats are stats and Sean has some great stats this season, but I don’t think there was a better athlete lining up back there at punter,” Atwood said of Chapa in December. “He can obviously punt it. He can place the ball, he can rugby-style punt it, and he runs a 4.5 so he can run it or run anyone down if he has to.”

Also on the TSWA all-state team was Alice linebacker Marc Garcia. The Alice High School senior made the all-state list as an honorable mention. Garcia was the captain of the Coyote defense and team's leading tackler.

The two played a role in shaping one of the Coyotes’ finest seasons in years. The Coyotes were 7-3 through the regular season and 3-2 in District 30-5A’s North Zone. Alice won its inter-zone game to get into the playoffs and won bi-district and area championship games.
