Any basketball coach is quick to preach about the importance of free throws.

Alice boys basketball coach Marco Gonzalez knows their value. The Coyotes picked up only their second District 30-5A North Zone win Friday night by beating Calallen, 74-63, behind a 31-point game by leading scorer John Leija.

Leila had had three three-point baskets in the game, but he also made good of 12 of 15 free throw attempts. He was also 10 of 13 from the free throw line in the second half. His trio of three-pointers came in the first period.

Leija’s numbers highlighted a big night by the Coyotes offensively. Also putting up double-digit scoring for Alice was Alejandro Barrientes and Ramiro Chavez. Barrientes scored 19 and Chavez added 15, nine of which came on three three-point baskets.

The Coyotes are 2-6 in district. Calallen dropped to 2-6 in the North Zone as well.
