The Alice Coyotes went down in the third-place game of the Coyote Kickoff Cup Saturday, but they didn’t go down without a fight.
The Coyotes opened the Alice tournament with a 1-0 victory against Tuloso-Midway Friday afternoon.
After a scoreless first half, in which Jordy Esquivel filled in a goalie and was credited with a pair of saves, Marcus Gaza scored off a Daniel Montes assist.
Gaza's goal came at the beginning of the second half. Goalie Matthew Olivarri had two saves down the stretch to save the victory.
The Coyotes advanced to the semifinals and lost to Corpus Christi Moody, 3-0, Friday night.
Alice returned Saturday and played London for third place in the tournament. The Coyotes quickly fell behind, 2-0, but tied the game on a penalty kick by Julian Garza and a goal by Montes off an assist by Matthew Lara. Late in the match, Alice again tied the match with a header by Garza off a corner kick by Gaza.
Despite the thrilling comeback, Alice lost the game in penalty kicks.
