Sometimes in soccer, it's easier to chase a lead than deal with the pressure of protectiing one.

However, that's what the Alice Coyotes did for a nearly a full half Friday afternoon in preserving 1-0 victory over district nemeisis Tuloso-Midway in the first round of the Coyote Kickoff Cup in Memorial Stadium.

After a scoreless first half, in which Jordy Esquivel filled in a goalie and was credited with a pair of saves, Marcus Gaza scored off a Daniel Montes assist.

Garza's goal came at the beginning of the second half. Goalie Matthew Olivarri had two saves down the stretch to save the victory.

The victory sent to the Alice Coyotes to the next round where they will meet Corpus Christi Moody late Friday night. The winner of that match heads to the tournament's championship round.

The tournament concludes Saturday.

Including the junior varsity division, the tournament included 18 teams.
