The Alice Coyote baseball program is once again turning to its past to help its future.
The high school baseball program is hosting its annual Alumni Game Saturday, Jan. 20 at the Alice Coyote Baseball Complex. The event begins with a home run derby at noon and the alumni game will follow. The game is now in its second year.
A benefit barbecue plate sale is also being held beginning at 11 a.m. that date.
To participate in the game, former players are asked to contribute $20. The contribution includes a barbecue plate. The plates are for sale for $7.
The event will also include the sale of the team’s old jerseys and an auction.
Alumni players are asked to sign up for the game by Jan. 12, and all proceeds from the event benefit the baseball program. This year’s plan is to supply each grade level with new uniforms and equipment.
Herman Arellano, an organizer, Alice school board member and a former pitcher for the Coyotes, said the plan is to have as many former players as possible represent as many teams as possible.
“We want to try and have representation from as many classes as we can,” Arellano said. “We want the turnout to be bigger than last year’s if possible. Everything we are doing that day is for all the boys in the baseball program to be able to have training equipment and nice uniforms at every grade level.”
