The Alice Coyotes are fixing to share the same court as the San Antonio Spurs.

The Alice boys varsity basketball team is playing Flour Bluff at the AT&T Center in San Antonio — the home of the Spurs — on Jan. 5. The game is a District 30-5A crossover game between Alice of the North Zone and Flour Bluff from the South.

The game in the AT&T Center is part of an ongoing program by the venue to feature some of the state’s high school basketball teams.

Flour Bluff is 8-8 so far this season and they’re a good representation of what kind of competition awaits Alice when 30-5A North Zone play begins. Aside from that, simply playing in a venue like the AT&T Center is a thrill for players and even coaches.

“How many people can say they played on the same court as the Spurs,” Alice coach Marco Gonzalez said. “If you think about the Spurs and all the games they’ve played there at the AT&T Center over the years, there’s a lot of memories there. I know it’s really exciting for everyone.”

The contest is just one of a couple of high school games slated for that day at the AT&T Center. Alice and Flour Bluff take the court at 1:15 p.m. The Spurs and the Phoenix Suns play on the AT&T Center floor at 7:30 p.m. that same day.

Alice has played in basketball games at the AT&T Center before. The last time was in 2008 against Mission Veterans. Gonzalez was an assistant at the time under then head coach George Beltran.

As part of the trip to the AT&T Center, the team will be able to stick around and watch the Spurs and the Suns that evening.
