Friday night was one of those nights when every single point not only counted, but mattered.

See, to get the second seed in 30-5A’s North Zone and an InterZone play-in game at home next week, the Coyotes needed a couple of things to happen Friday night.

First of all, the Coyotes needed to beat the Tuloso-Midway Warriors. Then, they needed Corpus Christi Ray to not only upset Gregory-Portland at home, but beat them soundly by at least 13 points.

As it all played out, Alice beat Tuloso-Midway, but they had to rely on a failed two-point conversion inside the final minute to win, 21-19. In Portland, where Ray needed a win by at least 13 points, the Texans led big early, but then hung on to win by 14.

What it all means is that the Coyotes finished the North Zone in second place behind first-place Calallen.

Alice now earns a home InterZone game next Friday. They host Corpus Christi Moody at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Moody is third in the South Zone behind Veterans Memorial and Flour Bluff.

The winner of the Alice-Moody game enters the postseason as a district runner-up.
