SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Vaqueros and West Oso Bears were locked in a defensive showdown Friday night.
The difference in the non-district match-up was the Bears’ ability to hit big plays to pull away and eventually clinch a 22-3 victory.
West Oso quarterback Christopher Valdez had touchdown passes of 20 and 56 yards. He also scored on a touchdown run of eight yards.
Meanwhile, San Diego moved the ball, but struggled to score. The Vaqueros’ only points came off a 30-yard field goal by Ryan Ochoa in the second quarter.
As a quarterback, Ochoa completed eight of 22 passes for 97 yards. He was intercepted twice. Ochoa also led the team in rushing with eight carries for 62 yards. His longest run of the night went for 25 yards.
West Oso’s Valdez completed 14 of 25 passes for 241 yards.
The Bears out-gained the Vaqueros in total offense, 3471 yards to 181.
West Oso improved to 2-1 for the season while San Diego dropped to 1-2.
The Vaqueros are on the field again Friday for a non-district game against Class 4A Orange Grove. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
