SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Lady Vaqueros’ first crack at defending District 30-3A champion George West didn’t go quite as planned.

The San Diego girls were solid early on, but eventually the Lady Longhorns demonstrated why they’re still the team to beat in the district.

After the Lady Vaqueros fought off the Lady Longhorns to win the first game, 25-23, George West rallied to win the next three and put San Diego away, 3-1. George West won the three games, 25-9, 25-18 and 25-18.

Afterwards, San Diego coach Missy Gonzalez said despite the loss, she was proud of the way her team played against a quality opponent.

“I’m disappointed that we didn’t get the win, but I’m proud of our girls,” Gonzalez said. “We played hard… we played to win. When you play a good team like George West you have to be on point and play aggressive the entire match.

“We still have lots of district games in front of us. We will continue to work to get better every day. That’s just what we do.”

Leandra Bazan led San Diego with eight kills. Andrea Jimenez, Kris Vela and Alex Gonzalez had two each. Bazan and Jimenez had two blocks each.

Kady Rios had 17 digs and Marley Martinez has 12. Alexia Rivera had 14 assists.
