Mexican-born fighter and part-time Alice resident Arturo Esquivel is getting a shot on a decent fight card Saturday in Laredo.

Esquivel (11-5) is fighting Austin Dulay of Huntsville, TN. Dulay is entering the fight unbeaten at 9-0. The fight is a scheduled six rounds.

Esquivel, a native of Chihuahua, Mexico, uses a work visa to train in Alice under boxing coach Diego Hinojosa. The pair train and workout at 361 Boxing Gym.

The fight is part of a Premier Boxing Champions event at Laredo Energy Arena in Laredo Saturday night.

The card’s main event features unbeaten contender David Benavides (17-0) and former title challenger Rogelio “Porky” Medina in a 168-pound elimination bout.

The card’s top two fights are scheduled to be broadcast on FS1 at 8 p.m. Saturday. If time allows, some of Esquivel’s fight could also be aired.

Hinojosa, who routinely trains Mexican fighters, said the fight is a big-time opportunity for Esquivel. Moreover, since Esquivel calls Alice home while he trains, he hopes a victory can bring some pride to the community.

“You know, there’s some many things going on with our city that I hope we can win and bring something to be proud of,” he said.
