In a contest which determines Alice’s best young athletes, Memorial Intermediate School left little doubt that they are the top team.
Memorial won the annual Alice Junior Olympics Monday evening at Memorial Stadium beating crosstown rival Dubose Intermediate School, 794-618.
Memorial’s coaching staff was made up of Gayle Rogers Garza, Tasha Trejo-Valdez, Javier Hernandez and Joe A. Gonzalez.
The Little Olympics, now in its 43rd year, was Tuesday in Memorial Stadium. It pits Alice’s six public elementary school’s on head-to-head competition in everything from traditional events like the 50-yard dash and shuttle relays to more unique events like the sack race and the standing broad jump.
The schools are broken up into Div. I (bigger schools) and Div. II (smaller schools). Saenz Elementary School is coming into the Little Olympics are the defending Div. I champion, while Hillcrest is the defending Div. II champion.
