AUSTIN — Ben Bolt-Palito Blanco High School senior Mikel Escobar set a personal record in the 800-meter run earlier this season, and running in the biggest high school meet in Texas Saturday, he managed to edge that mark and add to his state gold medal count.

Escobar won the Class 2A 800-meter run at the UIL state track and field meet Saturday at Mike A. Myers Stadium at the University of Texas in Austin. Escobar won the race with a time of 1:54.3. It was Escobar's third state gold medal.

Escobar, who is already committed to run for the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in Edinburg, advanced at the Region IV-2A track and field meet at Texas A&M University-Kingsville last week. He won the 800-meter run with a time of 1:57.97.

Earlier this season, Escobar set a personal record in the 800 meters at the Meet of Champions in the valley when he turned in a time of 1:54.5.
