It was a loss to the Bishop Lady Badgers during spring break which served a wake-up call of sorts for San Diego and sent them on an unbeaten run to the third round of the playoffs.

Ironically, that same Bishop team ended San Diego’s season with a series sweep in the Class 3A regional quarterfinals Friday in Alice. Although San Diego had won 13-straight games, including eight district games, before Friday, Bishop handed them back-to-back losses.

The Lady Badgers won a 2-1 decision in Game 1. They returned and beat the Lady Vaqueros, 10-1, in the second game.

The two teams went back and forth in Game 1 before San Diego went up 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth on a hard ground ball by Cierra Perez which scored Leandra Bazan from third.

The Lady Badgers took the lead in the top of the seventh when Elisa Suarez hit a two-run double.

Suarez also had a hand in shutting down San Diego. She was the winning pitcher. She went seven innings, allowing just five hits and striking out 10

San Diego pitcher Marley Martinez was also solid in Game 1. She too threw a complete game, allowing eight hits and striking out 10.

The Lady Vaqueros began Game 2 by scoring in the top of the first on a double by Bazan which scored Zalayna Perez. However, San Diego’s lead was short-lived. Bishop took the lead with a four-run lead in the fourth. They added another run in the fifth and five in the sixth.

Bishop outhit San Diego, 12-5, in the second game.
