The San Diego Vaqueros relied on big rallies to get by the first round of the playoffs.

However, when they needed a rush of hits and a couple of runs Thursday night in a Class 3A area match-up against the Bishop Badgers, the big plays never came.

The Badgers scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning and shut out San Diego through seven innings for a 5-0 victory in the one-game playoff at the Alice Coyote Baseball Complex.

Kevin Oliveira was 1-for-3 with a walk. Brian Laso and Orlando Bernal were 1-for-3. Trey Lopez was 1-for-1.

Michael Hernandez led Bishop, going 1-for-3 with three RBIs. Joe Fernandez was 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

Mateo Saenz five and two-thirds innings for San Diego. He allowed six hits, four strikeouts and five balls. He was relieved by Oliveira in the sixth.

Rico Trevino was the winning pitcher for Bishop. He went six innings. Allowed four hits and struck out nine and walked three.
