A head’s-up play in the bottom of the seventh inning not only gave the San Diego Lady Vaqueros Game 1 against Banquete, it pretty much gave them the series victory in Alice Friday night.

With Game 1 of their best-of-three area playoff series tied 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Banquete was an out away from forcing extra innings. However, San Diego senior Zalayna Perez was able to advance to third and then run past a wide-open home plate for a 3-2 win.

Perez advanced so quickly that the Lady Bulldogs seemed shocked as the play unfolded. Even the Lady Vaqueros’ dugout was unsure for a moment whether to celebrate or not. After a few moments, a game-winning celebration erupted around Perez.

As uplifting as the outcome was for the Lady Vaqueros, it was crushing for the Lady Bulldogs, who had played San Diego about as well as anyone for seven innings.

With momentum on San Diego’s side, Game 2 amounted to a mere formality.

The Lady Vaqueros totaled 23 hits in the 18-7 victory.

Rianna Lopez led San Diego’s offense in Game 2 going 5-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs. Zalayna Perez was 3-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs. Perez had a double, triple and home run. Marley Martinez was also 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a run.

Zalayna Perez was the winning pitcher in Game 2. Miranda Buentello started the game and was relieved by Perez in the second inning. Martinez earned the save.

Zalayna Perez and Lianna Vela each had two hits in the Game 1 win. Martinez earned the win. She gave up eight hits, but her six strike outs and a solid defense behind her kept Banquete grounded for most of the game. She held the Lady Bulldogs off the scoreboard until the top the sixth inning.

The Lady Vaqueros scored an early run in the fourth on a Cierra Perez triple. They scored again in the bottom of the fifth when Zalayna Perez scored on a hit by Zaleigh Perez and a Banquete error.

San Diego will face the winner of the Odem-Bishop series in the third round of the Class 3A playoffs next week.
