FREER — With about three games remaining in the regular season, the Freer Lady Buckaroos suffered a brutal setback, the kind of thing that could have easily spelled the end of a season.

Freer’s leading scorer, post DeeDra Lopez, was lost for the season with a knee injury. However, instead of dwelling on the injury, Freer regrouped. Coach Fran Adami moved players around and reset the Lady Buckaroos' line-up.

The end result was Freer finished strong and won the District 31-2A championship by beating the Ben Bolt-Palito Blanco Lady Badgers, and then they went on to defeat San Isidro, 62-33, in the bi-district round of the Class 2A playoffs Tuesday night.

Now, it’s heart and grittiness that has Adami feeling good about her Lady Buckaroos’ chances against tradition-rich Port Aransas squad in an area playoff showdown Friday.

“We’re playing well,” Adami said. “We lost DeeDra, but the girls have adjusted well and they continue to play hard.”

Freer (20-7) and Port Aransas are playing in a Class 2A area playoff game at 6 p.m. Friday at Sinton High School. The winner will face either Agua Dulce or La Pryor early next week for a chance to play in the Region IV-2A tournament.

With Lopez out of the line-up, Freer has relied on a balanced offensive attack led by Jalynn Utley, Meaghan Sharber and Renee Rodriguez.

Port Aranas reached the area playoffs by beating Sabinal, 39-28.
