CORPUS CHRISTI — Greg Rodriguez had every excuse not to perform well at the regional swimming and diving championships Friday.

The Alice High School diver was suffering from a sore throat, a cough and fever. However, when he stepped on the diving board at the Corpus Christi Natatorium Friday, it was as if none of that mattered.

Rodriguez turned in a series of dives to win third place in the boys 1-meter dive and earn a trip to the UIL championships in Austin.

Alice’s group of swimmers also competed in the preliminary round of the swimming competition, and each of the swimmers and relay teams advanced to the finals on Saturday.

Alice’s preliminary times Friday were:

Girls 50-yard freestyle — 4, Mikaela Martinez, 26.27.

Girls 100-yard freestyle — 4, Martinez, 56.99.
