The Alice Lady Coyotes weren’t going to allow the girls from Corpus Christi Miller to hang around Tuesday night.

That’s why the Lady Coyotes exploded for 27 first-period points on their way to a 65-35 victory over Miller. With the win, the Lady Coyotes are 2-1 in the District 30-5A North Zone standings. Alice is traveling to Gregory-Portland for another zone game Friday.

Alice’s fast start can partly be credited to junior Criselda Cruz, Kaity Buentello and Alex Garcia. Cruz scored 11 first-period points. Buentello and Garcia scored six each.

Cruz finished with 22 points and Garcia had 14.

Alice coach Amanda Gonzalez said it was the kind of outing that the team needed to gain confidence.

“This was a needed win for us,” Gonzalez said. “We are working on playing with high energy and improving very day. Everyone stepped in the game with that fire to push their limits and gain game experience. We ran the floor well. We still need to on execution, but we are getting there.”

Gonzalez said the Lady Coyotes are facing another challenge Friday.

“Friday is going to be another challenge for us, and the team needs to focus on the little things to be successful,” Gonzalez said. “

The Lady Coyotes are 12-13 for the season.
