The Calallen Wildcats are headed to the Class 5A, Div. II state quarterfinals and it’s thanks to a second-half surge Friday in an impressive victory against Boerne Champion.

The Wildcats put together a 20-7 win against Champion in regional semifinals in San Antonio by scoring 20 unanswered points between the second and fourth quarters.

Called is now facing former district rival Victoria East in the Region IV finals at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the Alamodome in San Antonio.

Champion came out and scored in its first possession. What looked like a long afternoon for the Wildcats ended up going the other way around. Called settled down and outplayed Champion through the final three quarters of the game. They held champion to 201 total yards while they rolled up 350 yards of total offense.

The Wildcats eventually cut Champion’s early lead by scoring in the second quarter on a three-yard run by quarterback Gaige Lamb.

Lamb scored again in a two-yard run in the third and took it in again to complete a two-point conversion.Alec Brown finished the game off in the fourth with a one-yard scoring run.

Brown led all rushers with 30 carries for 172 yards. Lamb rushed for 138 yards on 28 carries.
