During back to school season, I know we would all appreciate a few extra dollars in our pocket. Some extra money may be in your future if you have unclaimed property. Nearly 1 in 4 Texans have unclaimed property. The State of Texas Comptroller is responsible for collecting and distributing money that may be owed to you from unclaimed bank accounts, taxes paid, utility deposits or a number of other sources. In fact, since 2007, nearly $1.25 Billion has been returned to Texans.

To figure out if you one of those nearly 1 in 4 Texans with unclaimed property, you should visit www.claimittexas.org, where you can search the database by last name or address. You may also call the Comptroller's office at 1-800-654-3463. Be sure to have your social security number ready and previous addresses, as the money may have been owed to you when you lived in another home. The good news is that there is no timeframe for filing a claim, so the money will be held until you claim it.

Some may find that they have a few hundred or even a few thousand waiting to be claimed. Others may have only a few cents or a couple of dollars owed to them. In that case, you may consider donating that money. The Comptroller's office can transfer that money to Match The Promise, a foundation that provides scholarships to Texas students.
