Tuesday, January 10th marked the first day of the 85th Legislative Session. My family and I were at the State Capitol for the Opening Day ceremony earlier this week. Our office provided breakfast and lunch for guests from the district that made the trip to Austin. The swearing in ceremony took place in the House Chamber and it was exciting to see all the other representatives back in the Capitol. We had all 150 Representatives and 31 Senators who represent districts all over Texas in attendance.
This is my forth legislative session and I'm grateful for the opportunity to serve you. The last session was in 2015 and we made progress on many important issues. I worked hard to improve funding for our local universities, courthouses and roads in our district last session. Continuing to improve education and creating jobs for our district and the State of Texas will be major focus again this session. It will be important to utilize the information we collected during the interim to write the most effective legislation.
As we begin 2017, I look forward to working even harder for South Texas. We must change the school funding formula to make sure our schools get their fair share. We must make common sense laws that help working families and boost the economy. And we must protect Texas from federal government regulations that hurt small and family businesses.
I'm extremely thankful for another opportunity to be your representative in Austin. Please contact my offices in Portland or Austin anytime with your concerns.
