SAN DIEGO, Texas - Maria Estella "Bebe" Garcia Barkley born January 1, 1922, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday October 25, 2007 at 2:33 a.m. "La Bebe," as she was known by many, graduated from San Diego High School in 1939. She attended Texas State College for Women in Denton, Texas, but left to marry James "Jimmy" Haught. She lived in Reno, Nev., Hebbronville, Texas, and Laredo, Texas. After Jimmy's death she moved back to San Diego, Texas to live with her parents and worked for the State Department of Public Welfare.

She married Robert W. Barkley, an independent landman from Austin, Texas. She moved back to Duval County where she was very active in local politics.

She worked as a legal secretary for then County Judge Archie Parr and later for the Duval County Conservation and Reclamation District. She served as Democratic Chairwoman for Duval County, she was a member of the Catholic Daughters, the Guadalupanas and was an avid supporter of the San Diego Vaquero Booster Club and post high-school education.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lorenzo and Estella G. Garcia, her sister, Olivia (the late Oscar) Gonzales, her brother, Luis Felipe (the late Sarita) Garica, her younger brother, Lorenzo Amando "Chacho" Garcia, and her first husband, James Haught.

Survivors include her only daughter, Laura Estelle Barkley (Atlee Martin) Parr; a grandson and numerous other friends and relatives.

Visitation was held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, October 26, 2007, with a Rosary recited at 7 p.m. that evening at Garza Funeral Home in San Diego. A funeral Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 27, 2007 at St. Francis De Paula Catholic Church in San Diego. Burial followed at the San Diego Cemetery.

SAN DIEGO, Texas - Jose A. "Pepe" Olvera, 78, passed away October 22, 2007 in an Alice nursing center. Jose was a Charter Member of the Alice Evening Lions Club and served in the capacity of President. He was also President of the American Federation of Government Employees during his employment with the Kingsville Naval Air Station. Joe fought for the rights of the Civil Service Employees. He was a Disabled Army Veteran and retired with 37 years of service as a Budget Analyst.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rodolfo and Aurora Aleman Olvera; his first wife, Solia R. Olvera; one sister, Oralia Olvera; and one brother: Rodolfo Olvera Jr.

Survivors include his wife, Ester N. Olvera of Alice, Texas; one son, Jose O. (Gloria) Olvera of Laredo, Texas; three stepsons, Pablo (Lynann) Longoria and Ricardo (Sheri) Longoria, both of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Jose Longoria of Premont, Texas; one stepdaughter, Adele (Tom) Deaton of Brownfield, Texas; four brothers, Guillermo "Willie" Olvera and Roberto (Raquel) Olvera, both of San Antonio, Texas, Enrique (Josie) Olvera of Alice, Texas, and Ruben (Sylvia) Olvera of San Antonio, Texas; two sisters, Oralia (Ben) Flores and Lydia Olvera, both of San Diego, Texas; 11 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation was at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, October 24, 2007 at Mauro P. Garcia Funeral Home in San Diego. A Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. that evening. Funeral Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, October 25, 2007 at St. Frances de Paula Catholic Church and burial followed at the San Diego Cemetery.
