BENAVIDES, Texas - Veronica Vera Carrillo, 91, a lifelong resident of Benavides, Texas, died Tuesday, May 22, 2007, in a Corpus Christi nursing home. She was well known for her delicious tamales and pan de polvo. She was also known for winning the cabrito contest several times in Fiesta de Rancho in Concepcion and for winning the tortilla contest in the Fiesta de Benavides. She enjoyed her yearly trips to Las Vegas with her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Domingo Carrillo Sr.; and her son, Benito Carrillo Sr.
Survivors include three sons, Domingo Carrillo Jr. of Benavides, and Arnoldo Carrillo and Fernando (Adelaida) Carrillo, both of Corpus Christi, Texas; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held from 4 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, May 24, 2007, at the Garza Funeral Home in San Diego, Texas, with a Vigil for the Deceased observed at 7 p.m. that evening. Funeral Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 25, 2007, at Santa Rosa de Lima Catholic Church in Benavides, Texas, with Father Nolasco Hinojosa as celebrant. Burial followed at the Benavides Cemetery.
