Koenig

ORANGE GROVE, Texas - Maxine Osterloh Koenig passed away February 24, 2008 at Retama Manor Nursing Home in Alice, Texas. Maxine was born in Orange Grove, Texas, on August 22, 1928 to Max Osterloh and Erna Herm Osterloh. She was valedictorian of her class of 1946 and entered business college in San Antonio in the fall of 1946. However, her college career was pleasantly cut short by the return of Franklin Koenig from World War II, who persuaded her to become his bride. They were married July 20, 1947 at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Orange Grove, where they both were lifelong members.

She assisted Franklin in the operation of a successful floor covering business for more than 40 years and in the raising of two children. Maxine always "strongly recommended" that her children study hard and use their abilities. She was rewarded when both of her children were also valedictorians of their classes and received accounting degrees from the University of Texas. Maxine was an ardent University of Texas Longhorn sports fan, especially for football. This affiliation began when her brother began his pharmacy studies there in 1952. She was the supreme pessimist when it came to Texas sporting events, and it can probably be safely said that Maxine might have missed more successful plays by covering her eyes (both in attendance at games and watching on television) than almost any other Longhorn fan in history. In July of 1997, she and Franklin hosted several hundred of their family members and friends in a celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary in Orange Grove.

Maxine was preceded in death by her mother, Erna Osterloh in 1986; her father, Max Osterloh in 1990; her mother-in-law, Hilda Jaroszewski Koenig in 1976; her father-in-law, Frank Koenig in 1978; her sister-in-law, Merlene Koenig Dahse in 1995; and her husband, Franklin Koenig on February 24, 1998. Maxine died exactly ten years to the day after her husband's death.

Survivors include her brother, Roy Osterloh and sister-in-law, Joyce Osterloh of Alice, who provided Maxine with the utmost in loving and compassionate care and support for the eight long years after her debilitating stroke in December of 1999; her children, Larry Koenig of Austin, Texas, and Cheryl (husband Pat Moore) Moore, also of Austin; her grandsons: Kurt Koenig, who is currently deployed as a U.S. Army combat medic in Baghdad, Iraq, and Austin Moore and Carson Moore, both of Austin; her brother-in-law, Henry Dahse of Orange Grove; and nieces and nephews, Brenda Smock of Breckenridge, Sarah Williams of Marion, Steve Osterloh of Corpus Christi, Kristi Philbrick of Alice and Laura Gwosdz of Orange Grove.

The family would like to thank the entire staff of Retama Manor Nursing Home in Alice for their exemplary care of Maxine for the last eight years.

The family will receive visitors Wednesday evening, February 27, 2008 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Holmgreen Mortuary in Alice, Texas. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, February 28, 2008 at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 600 S. Dibrell Street, Orange Grove. Interment will be at the Sons of Hermann Cemetery in Orange Grove. A reception will follow at the church complex.

Memorials may be made in remembrance of Maxine to First Evangelical Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 605, Orange Grove, Texas 78372.
