FREER, Texas - Elvira Trigo Cantu, 80, a long time resident of Freer, Texas, died Saturday, July 7, 2007 in a San Diego nursing home after a short illness. She was a devoted Buckaroo fan and her favorite pastime was gambling. She was a loving mother, grandmother and sister who will be sadly missed by her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years of marriage, Jose Cantu Sr.; one son, David Cantu, three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Survivors include her daughter, Maria Elda (Abelardo) Medellin of San Diego, Texas; her sons, Leandro (Yohanna) Cantu of San Antonio, Texas, Jose (Alicia) Cantu of McAllen, Texas, Conrado (Maria Elena) Cantu, Rene (Eufemia) Cantu and Oscar (Sylvia) Cantu, all of Freer, Texas, and Daniel Cantu of Granbury, Texas; one brother, Evaristo Trigo of Corpus Christi, Texas; two sisters, Manuela Tanguma and Leonarda Alaniz, both of San Diego, Texas; 20 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. on Monday, July 9, 2007 at the Garza Funeral Home in Freer, Texas. Vigil for the Deceased will be observed and Rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. that evening. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 10, 2007 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Freer, Texas. Burial will follow at the Hahl Memorial Cemetery.

ALICE, Texas - Joy M. Startz, 69, went to be with her Lord and Savior July 5, 2007 at her home in Alice surrounded by her family. She was born February 7, 1938 in Banquete, Texas, to William and Ia Ware. Joy was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church in Alice. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Survivors include her husband, Edgar Startz of Alice; four daughters, Vicky (Tim) Harkins of Carrollton, Texas, Judy (Paul) Harmon of Pearland, Texas, Kathy (Kent) Bode of Orange Grove, Texas, and Janice Christopherson of Tulsa, Okla.; two sons, Donnie (Doris) Startz of Mobile, Ala., and Darrell (Janice) Startz of Alice, Texas; two sisters, Jean Teal of Mobile, Ala., and Sandra (Paul) Smid of Grand Rapids, Mich.,; three brothers, Donald Ware and Ira (Betty) Ware, both of Banquete, Texas, and Bob Ware of Sinton; 12 grandchildren, Terri, Christopher, Kimberly, Jeffrey, Lindsay, Kelly, Kaylee, Jake, Michael, Jessica, Natalie and Tyler; and two great-grandchildren, Annabel and soon to be born, Adam.
Visitation was Saturday, July 7, 2007 and Sunday, July 8, 2007 from 1 to 9 p.m. with the family present on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m.
Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, July 9, 2007 at the First Baptist Church in Alice. Burial followed in Roselawn Memorial Park.
