Velma Leola Martin Helms Machen, 94, of Sandia died Friday, Oct. 5, 2007.

She was born on Feb. 2, 1913 in Reagan to James Daniel and Eliza Burney Martin. Velma was married to Sam Helms from 1924 to 1969. She was then married to Harold Machen from 1971 to 2004. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church in Sandia. She loved flowers and enjoyed writing poetry.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Sam Helms and Harold Machen; siblings, Ellen Shanks, Earl Martin, Ernestine Hall, Alma Boultinghouse, Louis Martin, Clyde Martin and J.D. Martin.

She is survived by her sister, Ethel Ray of Corpus Christi; three children, Mickey (Brenda) Machen of Taft, Harolyn (Carmen) Schroedter of Lafayette, La., and Malcolm (Beth) Machen of Pleasanton; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren.

Graveside funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 8, at the Sandia Cemetery in Sandia.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Sandia Cemetery Association or to Grace United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.
