FREER, Texas – Virginia L. Villarreal, 80, a former resident of Alice, Texas, and a resident of Freer, Texas, since 1980, died Saturday, January 24, 2009 in an Alice hospital after a short illness. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Freer and was well known to everyone as “Mrs. V” or “Granny.” She was formerly employed by JC Penney’s in Alice as a floor manager for more than 25 years, and previously worked at Terry Ferry’s and also owned rental properties in Freer, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents, Juan and Florencia Laredo; her husbands, Corando Salazar and Silvestre Villarreal; a daughter, Velinda S. Guerrero; and three brothers, Victor Laredo, Delfino Laredo and Efrain Gonzalez. Virginia is survived by a daughter, Velma Lee Lopez of Freer, Texas; six grandchildren, Michael Galvan, Vanessa Ramos, Clarissa Lopez, Marco Lopez, Ricardo Guerrero Jr., and Andrew Guerrero; a great-granddaughter, Kellie Martinez; a sister, Lucia Donahue of Alice, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 at the Garza Funeral Home in Freer, Texas, with a Rosary to be recited at 7:30 p.m. that evening. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Freer, Texas. Interment will follow at Hahl Memorial Cemetery in Freer, Texas.
