SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Leocadio "Leo" Casas Jr., 74, passed away May 3, 2007 in a San Antonio hospital after a short illness. He was born February 27, 1933 in Benavides, Texas. He graduated from Benavides High School in 1951 and Texas A & M University in College Station, Texas, in 1955 with a degree in Animal Husbandry.
He married the former Minerva Cuellar of San Diego, Texas, and raised his family in Alice, Texas. He continued his family's ranching tradition in Duval County and was one of the early breeders of Beefmaster cattle in the state. Casas had a 16 year career with Farmers Home Administration as a loan officer. He served as supervisor of Duval, Brooks, Atascosa, and Frio counties. In his capacity as county supervisor, he loaned Federal Funds to area farmers and ranchers and also financed housing for hundreds of families in San Diego, Benavides, Freer, Falfurrias, Pearsall, Dilley, Pleasanton, Poteet, and other communities.
He will best be remembered for his unforgettable sense of humor that touched the many friends and acquaintances he accumulated over the years in the South Texas ranching community. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leocadio Casas Sr. and Lauriana Salinas Casas; brother Victoriano Casas; and daughter Teresa Annette Casas Martinez.
Survivors include three sisters, Virginia (Enrique) Ramirez of Realitos, Ninfa C. Mc Dermott of San Diego, and Lucilla Casas of McAllen; two granddaughters, Sara Camille Casas and Ana Claire Casas and one son, Leocadio (Leo) Casas III (Roxane Marie) all of Beeville; one daughter, Marta Gina Casas of San Antonio; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
Pallbearers are nephews Richard DeLeon, Stevan DeLeon, Enrique Ramirez Jr., Roberto Ramirez, Carlos Tomas McDermott, and David McDermott.
A Rosary will be recited Sunday May 6, 2007 at 7 p.m. at Mauro P. Garcia Funeral Home in San Diego. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, May 7, 2007 at Santa Rosa de Lima Catholic Church in Benavides, Texas. Burial will follow at the Benavides Cemetary in Benavides, Texas.

ALICE, Texas - Francisco Chapa, 69, passed away May 3, 2007 at his home in Alice. He was born October 4, 1937 in Orange Grove, Texas, to Pedro and Fidela Chapa. He retired from Tuloso-Midway I.S.D. as a school administrator after 10 years, He also served as the Tax Collector and Assessor for the City of Alice for ten years. After his retirement, Francisco did what he loved to do best, ranching. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Carmen Chapa of Alice; his daughter, Angelica Chapa of Alice; his son David (fianc/e Joy Wu) Chapa of Plano; his sister, Magdalena (Arnold) Hinojosa of Alice; his brother, Pedro "Prieto" (Charlene) Chapa of Columbus, Ohio; his aunt, Maria Louisa (Faustino) Cardona of Alice; five nephews, Orlando, Rolando, Arnold, Bruce and Christopher; and numerous loving cousins.
Visitation will be Saturday, May 5, 2007 from 1 to 9 p.m. and Sunday, May 6, 2007 from 1 to 9 p.m. with a Rosary recited at 7 p.m. that evening at the Holmgreen Mortuary Chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday May 7, 2007 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Alice. Burial will follow in the Calaveras Cemetery.
