SAN DIEGO, Texas - Elizardo D. Ruiz, 85, passed away Thursday, June 28, 2007. He was born on September 18, 1921 to Pilar and Santos De Luna Ruiz in San Diego, Texas, but resided in Ingleside, Texas. He served his country during World War II, entering the United States Army on October 20, 1942. He was shipped overseas where he fought to defend his country for three years in the Central Pacific. During his time of service with the U.S. Army, he was decorated with six overseas service bars - the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stars, Philippine Liberation Medal, Victory Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal and Service Strip. He recalled very well his Military Occupational Specialty "The Ammunition Bearer No. 504." He was preceded in death by his wife, Christella Vega Garcia Ruiz; a sister, Elvira Valadez; and a brother, Jose Ruiz.
Survivors include his three daughters, Edna (Adan Jose) Villarreal of Ingleside, Texas, Rosario (Rosendo) Perez and Rosabel (Paul) Reyna, both of Corpus Christi, Texas; three sons, Elizardo (Gloria) Ruiz Jr. of Sugarland, Texas, Joel Jenaro (Ela) Ruiz and Jesus Maria (Leticia) Ruiz, both of Corpus Christi, Texas; sister, Basilia Davis of San Antonio, Texas; 13 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A Rosary will be recited Friday, June 29, 2007 at 6 p.m. at Mauro P. Garcia Funeral Home Chapel in San Diego. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, June 30, 2007 at 10 a.m. at St. Francis De Paula Catholic Church in San Diego. The V.F.W. Post #8931 and the United Veteran's Burial Association of Alice, Texas, will conduct military graveside services. Burial will follow at the Benavides Cemetery in Benavides, Texas.
