Acker

ALICE, Texas - Helen Louise Acker, 77, passed away on November 20, 2007, in a Corpus Christi hospital. She was born October 19, 1930 in Austin, Texas, to Harry Lee and Helen McKee. She attended the Universtiy of Texas in Austin, where she met and married Bill Acker. They moved to Freer, Texas, where they raised their three children. Helen instilled caring, compassion and discipline in her children who to this day appreciate and love her. She later moved to Alice where she volunteered regularly at Alice Regional Hospital and attended multiple churches where she made numerous friends.

Survivors include her husband, W. B. Acker of Alice; one daughter, Ann Liles of Alice; two sons, Bill (Carol) Acker of Alice and Jim Acker of Freer, Texas; one brother, Harry Lee McKee Jr. of Martindale; and eight grandchildren. She will be missed.

A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 21, 2007 in Roselawn Memorial Park in Alice, Texas.

Bazan

ALICE, Texas - Gloria L. Bazan, 62, passed away November 23, 2007 in a Corpus Christi hospital. Gloria Lamar had a profound love for children and for learning. After her graduation from Hebbronville High School in 1963, she received a Bachelor of Science degree and a teaching certificate from Texas Women’s University in Denton, Texas. She fulfilled her dream of serving children in South Texas by teaching at the elementary level for 31 years in the school districts of Corpus Christi, Bruni, and Alice. She was a dedicated and devoted teacher who always had the students’ welfare and growth as her top priority. Her experience in the field of education gave her the opportunity to develop true and lasting friendships with many people. Her relationship with people gave Gloria an enriching and happy life. She lived for her family and friends whom she cherished until her dying day. After her retirement from teaching in 2000, she stayed in constant touch with her circle of school and church friends and with many of the parents of her former students in the communities where she had taught. Her love for children and for education will continue in the lives of the many people whom she impacted with her caring and loving touch, a uniqueness which Gloria possessed. She will be missed and remembered, but spiritually she will live amongst all who loved her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Raul and Alicia Ramirez Puig.

Survivors include her husband Juan L. Bazan of Alice, Texas; one son, John Michael Bazan of Alice, Texas; three brothers, Juan (Gloria) Puig of Hebbronville, Texas, Raul (Estella) Puig of Rivera, Texas, and Dario (Mary) Puig of Corpus Christi, Texas; one sister, Raquel Lopez of Zapata, Texas; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation hours were from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, November 25, 2007 at Mauro P. Garcia Funeral Home of Alice. She was viewed beginning at 6:30 p.m. that evening at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with a Rosary recited immediately following at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass was celebrated at 9 a.m. Monday, November 26, 2007 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and burial followed at La Mota De Olmos Family Cemetery in Duval County, Texas.

Cardona

POTEET, Texas - Eloisa Cardona, 86, passed away on November 23, 2007 in Poteet, Texas.

Survivors include her daughters, Maria Elsa (Rayford) Comb of Poteet, Texas, Irma (Don) Hurd of San Antonio, Texas; a son, Jacinto (Olga) Cardona of San Antonio, Texas; a sister, Santos Collins of San Antonio, Texas; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Visitation began at 9 a.m. Monday, November 26, 2007 with a gravesite service following at 1 p.m. that afternoon at the New Collins Cemetery.

McCleery

ALICE, Texas - Kenneth W. McCleery, 67, passed away November 20, 2007 in the Alice hospital. He was born November 20, 1940 in Wichita Falls, Texas, to Linn and Miriam McCleery. He worked in oilfield security, was an avid ham radio operator and a member of the First Baptist Church in Alice. He attended Bible study with the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Alice. He was preceded in death by his father, Linn McCleery.

Survivors include his mother, Miriam McCleery of Alice; four sisters, Kay Jenkins of Orange Grove, Linda (Gary) Brownlow of Burleson, Charlotte (Jerald) Nesloney of Orange Grove and Brenda (Danny) Sikoiski of Bryan; three nephews and five nieces.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, November 26, 2007 at Holmgreen Mortuary Chapel in Alice.

Pope

ROCKDALE, Texas - Bernice Imogene Walker Pope, 90, passed away Monday, November 19, 2007 at the Autumn Oak Retirement Center in Schertz, Texas. She was born July 27, 1917 in Bell County, Texas, to Clifford and Winnie Hagler Walker. She married Marvin Ellis Pope on October 16, 1937 in Bell County, Texas. She was a former resident of Alice and Victoria, Texas; and a current resident of Schertz, Texas. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin “Red” Ellis Pope; brother, Clifford Walker Jr.; and sisters, Vivian Shelton and Margie Lynn Starnes.

Survivors include her sons, Marvin Pope of Odem, Texas, and Clifford Roy Pope of Austin, Texas; Patsy Ruth Fowler of Schertz, Texas, Betty Sue Pittman of Austin, Carolyn Vega of Bakersfield, Calif., and Barbara Lynn Butler of El Paso, Texas; 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, November 26, 2007 at the Friendship Methodist Church near Davila, Texas. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. that afternoon at the same location with James Fowler officiating. Burial will follow at the Friendship Cemetery near Davila, Texas.
