Albert

AUSTIN, Texas - Catherine Perkins Albert, Navy nurse and wife of Dr. Richard O. Albert, died July 31, 2007, in Austin, Texas. She recommended a life's work that involved helping other people as being the happiest life you could choose.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4, 2007 at Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel in Austin. Burial was held at 3 p.m. that afternoon at the Perkins Family Cemetery.

Benavides

Simon G. Benavides, 86, of Alice died August 2, 2007 in an Alice hospital after a long illness. He was a retired construction worker. He lived his life for his wife and family. He was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan and Houston Astros fan. His pride and joy were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Daniel Benavides; two grandchildren, Ruben Perez Jr. and John Aaron Benavides; and his two brothers.

Survivors include his beloved and devoted wife of 50 years, Maria Ana Benavides of Alice; five sons, Adolfo (Mary Lou) Figueroa, Felix (Consuelo) Benavides and Victor (Annette) Benavides, all of Alice, Simon (Becky) Benavides Jr. of Katy, Texas, and Martin (Elsa) Benavides of Bishop, Texas; four daughters, Emilia Flores, Anna (Ruben) Perez, Lisa (Christopher Abshire) Benavides and Christina (Alex) Villegas, all of Alice; two sisters, Carolota Gonzalez and Luz Villarreal of Alice; 24 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, August 5, 2007 with visitations starting at 3 p.m. at Mauro P. Garcia Funeral Home Chapel in Alice. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, August 6, 2007 at Our Lady of Guadalupe. Burial will follow at Roberson-Collins Cemetery in Alice.

Hinojosa

BENAVIDES - Isabel G. "Chavela" Hinojosa, 93, a lifetime resident of Benavides, Texas, passed away Friday, August 3, 2007 in a Corpus Christi nursing home after a short illness. She was the last of 14 siblings. She retired as a cafeteria worker for Benavides I.S.D. after 35 years of employment. She was well known for baking pan de polvo and wedding cakes.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Juvencio Hinojosa, and a grandson.

She leaves to cherish her memories her sons, Jose Luis (Rebecca) Hinojosa of Falfurrias, Texas, and Juan Rafael (Mary) Hinojosa of Corpus Christi, Texas; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, August 5, 2007 at the Garza Funeral Home in San Diego, Texas. Vigil observance of the deceased and a Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. that evening. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, August 6, 2007 at 10 a.m. at Santa Rosa De Lima Catholic Church in Benavides, Texas with Father Paul as celebrant. Burial will follow at the Benavides Cemetery

Kalinec

Brenda Sue Combs Kalinec, 66, devoted wife, mother and grandmother passed away August 3, 2007 in a Corpus Christi hospital. She was born January 22, 1941 to Howard and Jewel Combs in Houston, Texas. She moved to Alice at age 2. Brenda attended St. Elizabeth elementary through eighth grade and graduated from Alice High School in 1960. While attending two years of business college, she met the love of her life on a blind date set up by her sister, Judy. Brenda married Frank T. Kalinec on May 12, 1962, and 45 years later she left his world to sit at the right hand of God.

Brenda was a homemaker and a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Alice. She dedicated her life to the service of God by teaching others, young and old, Christian doctrine for more than 27 years. She was a member of the Altar Society and Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, serving as president for two years and other numerous church activities.

Brenda was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Jimmy Combs of Beeville and Howard Ray Combs of Terrell; one sister, Katherine Ann Combs of Alice; and a brother-in-law, George Kalinec of Alice.

Survivors include her loving husband, Frank T. Kalinec of Alice; three children, Joseph H. (Angie) Kalinec of Corpus Christi, Susan M. (Ronnie) Ruether of Brenham and Nathan I. (Stephanie) Kalinec of San Antonio; 10 grandchildren, Carrie, Andrew and Kyle Kalinec of Corpus Christi, Brandon, Rachel, Cassie and Jeremy Ruether of Brenham, Matthew, Chelsea and Amber Kalinec of San Antonio; one sister, Judy K. Combs (Calvin) Siminton; brothers-in-law, Joe (Evelyn) Kalinec of Orange Grove, Charles (Margie) Kalinec of Kingsville, Henry (Jane) Kalinec of San Antonio, Jerry (Johanna) Kalinec of Alice and Benjamin (Olene) Kalinec of Waller, two sisters-in-law, Frances (Don) Olson of Oregon and Dorothy (Ronnie) Bertagna of California.

Visitation will be Sunday, August 5, 2007 from 1 to 9 p.m. and Monday, August 6, 2007 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a Rosary to be recited Monday at 7 p.m. at Holmgreen Mortuary Chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 7, 2007 at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Alice. Burial will follow in Alice Cemetery.

Reyes

Victoria "Vickie" S. Reyes, 80, of Alice, passed away Friday, August 3, 2007 in an Alice hospital.

She was born September 30, 1926 in San Diego, Texas, to Jose and San Juana Cantu Solis. She was a graduate of San Diego High School, Class of 1944. She was retired from the United States government and was presently a volunteer at CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Alice.

She was a parish member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and a member of the Catholic Daughters of America. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Edmundo Reyes.

Survivors include her son, Edmundo D. (Emma) Reyes of McAllen; daughter, Sue Lopez of Alice; brother, Enrique C. (Nena) Solis of San Diego; six grandchildren, Amanda C. Reyes, Elaine Reyes, Joe Rodriguez, Aracely Rodriguez, Roxie Rodriguez and Madeline Lopez; and one great-grandchild, Maggie Gonzalez.

Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday, August 5, 2007 at Mauro P. Garcia Funeral Home Chapel in San Diego with a Rosary at 7 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. Monday, August 6, 2007 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Alice. Burial will follow in the San Diego Cemetery in San Diego, Texas.
