VICTORIA, Texas - Maria Guadalupe "Lupita" Canales passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on June 22, 2007 after a long fight with diabetes. She was the director of Small Folks Development Center in Falfurrias, Texas. For the past 11 years of her life she lived in Victoria, Texas, where she was involved in her church choir and community. She was preceded in death by her parents, Andres and Maria Guadalupe Castillo; and her brothers, Andres Jr., Roberto, and Pedro.
Survivors include her husband, Robert Leal; her son, Rudy (Lisa) Canales; her brothers, Enrique, Pablo, Saul and Luis Castillo; her sisters, Minerva Joslin, Juanita Castillo, Sylvia Quintero, Francisca Hernandez, Elena Isley-Kolp and Esmeralda Ferreyera; three grandchildren, and many aunts, uncles and cousins who live in Houston, Alice and San Antonio.
A prayer service was held at Faith Family Church in Victoria at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 24, 2007. Following the service, visitation was held at Artero Funeral Home in Victoria from 4 to 9 p.m.
She will be laid to rest alongside her parents and brothers on Monday, June 25, 2007 at 2 p.m. in the New Collins Cemetery in Alice, Texas.

ALFRED, Texas - Jesus M. Garcia, 91, passed away June 22, 2007 in an Alice hospital. He was born September 10, 1915 in Alice, Texas, to Seferino and Maria Perez Garcia. He was a retired foreman for Southern Pacific Railroad and also a retired rancher. He was an avid New York Yankees fan. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorenza Garcia, in December of 2005 and by his parents.
Survivors include five daughters, Leonora Casares and Olga (Ted) Gonzalez, both of Corpus Christi, Texas, Lorenza O. (William) Bowland, Maria E. Rose and Adriana L. (Israel) Guerra, all of Orange Grove, Texas; three sons, Seferino (Feliz) Garcia of Orange Grove, Daniel Garcia of Alice and Marcos Garcia of Orange Grove; 21 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation was Sunday, June 24, 2007 from 1 to 9 p.m. with a Rosary recited at 7 p.m. that evening at Holmgreen Mortuary Chapel in Alice.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at 9 a.m. Monday, June 25, 2007 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Alice. Burial followed in the Adams Ranch Cemetery near Alfred, Texas, with military honors conducted by the United Veterans Burial Association of Alice.

BAYTOWN, Texas - Luis Luna, 62, of Baytown, Texas, was born August 25, 1944 in Alice, Texas, and was surrounded by his loving family Friday, June 22, 2007 when he went to be with his Lord after a long battle with cancer. He was a member of Second Baptist Church and Bethel Baptist Church and was a heavy equipment mechanic for various companies, most recently Enterprise Transportation. He enjoyed going to football games with his grandchildren and going to the family ranch in South Texas. He was preceded in death by his brother, Adan Luna and sister, Guadalupe Luna and is survived by his wife, Francis Luna of Baytown (also known as "The Kroger Lady"); sons and daughter-in-law, Isauro Jr. and Velma Franco of Alice and Jose Luis "Louie" Gonzales and Lisa Acosta of Austin; daughters and sons-in-law, Esmeralda and Ramero Marroquin of Robstown and Virginia Ramirez, Leticia and Arnulfo Razo, and Letitia and Mario Morales, all of Baytown; parents, Valentin and Ester Luna of Alice; brothers and sisters-in-law, Valentin Luna Jr., and Rene and Rosie Luna, all of Alice; sisters and brothers-in-law, Estella and Oscar Ramirez, Maria Elena and Frank Lemon, Eva Luna, Irma Luna, Lucia Charles, and Linda and Robert Torrez, all of Alice; 22 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Serving as pallbearers will be his eldest grandsons and honorary pallbearers will be Adam West Razo and Eric Gonzales.
His family will receive friends at Navarre Funeral Home Monday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Funeral services will be Tuesday, June 26, 2007 at 1 p.m. at Navarre Funeral Home with Rev. Mark Stafford officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Luis' family would like to say a special thanks to the staff of the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center and Odyssey Healthcare for their special care and support shown during his illness.

SAN DIEGO, Texas - Aminta Saenz, 92 years old, passed away Sunday, June 24, 2007 after a short illness. Aminta was a native of Loma Alta Ranch and was a former employee of R&S Gonzalez (Western Wear Store) in San Diego, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents, Isidro and Carolina Lopez Saenz; two brothers, Anatolio L. Saenz and Aaron L. Saenz; sister, Amina S. Tobin; sister-in-law, Maria "Cuca" Saenz; and three brothers-in-law, Jesus Tobin, Alvino Mendoza and Pedro Bazan.
Survivors include her brother, Angel L. (Delia) Saenz of Laredo, Texas; three sisters, Areopajita S. Mendoza of Lockhart, Texas, Adelaida S. Bazan of Benavides, Texas, Andrea S. Lalo Reyna of Corpus Christi, Texas; her sister-in-law, Judith G. Saenz of Alice, Texas; and 29 nieces and nephews.

ALICE, Texas - Michael Anthony Saenz, 41, passed away Thursday, June 21, 2007 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Michael was a truck driver employed by S.T.S. Performance Fluids for eight months. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Olga and Andres Saenz Jr., and his paternal grandparents, Rosaura and Eustorgio Saenz.
Survivors include two sons, Michael Anthony Saenz Jr. and John Michael Saenz, both of Alice, Texas; one daughter, Ariel Marie Saenz, of Alice, Texas; parents Olga and Avelino K. ALICE, Texas - Abel G. Valverde, 76, passed away June 23, 2007 in an Alice hospital. He was an Army veteran and served in the Korean Conflict as a radio technician. He was a Past Commander of the V.F.W. Post 8621 and the American Legion. He was also a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post 8621. He was preceded in death by his parents, Guadalupe and Guillerma Valverde; and his first wife, Elma G. Valverde.
Survivors include his wife, Amparo Valverde of Alice, Texas; one son, Ismael (Sylvia) Valverde of Alice, Texas; one daughter, Brenda Lee Valverde of Alice, Texas; one brother, Samuel Valverde of Alice, Texas; three sisters, Rebecca Rodriguez of Bishop, Texas, and Idolina Bernal and Irma Rodriguez, both of Alice, Texas; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Virgil Leon Wiederkehr, 82, passed away June 22, 2007 in Georgetown, Texas. He was born March 23, 1925 in Freer, Texas, to Henry and Eva Riley Wiederkehr. He was a retired geologist. He was preceded in death by a brother, Alvin Wiederkehr; and by a grandson, Gene Wiederkehr Jr.
Survivors include his wife, Vivian Wiederkehr of Georgetown; three sons, Gene (Pat) Wiederkehr of Alice, Michael (Kathy) Wiederkehr of Austin and David (Kathleen) Wiederkehr of Round Rock; and seven grandchildren.
Visitation will be Monday, June 25, 2007 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Tuesday, June 26, 2007 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. that evening at Holmgreen Mortuary in Alice.
The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 27, 2007 at the Holmgreen Mortuary Chapel. Burial will follow in the Alice Cemetery.
