Miriam Louise Scott McCleery left this world to join her Heavenly Father on Thursday, May 25, 2017 at 2:06 p.m. She currently resided at a nursing facility in Calallen, Texas and was a member of The Grove First Baptist Church in Orange Grove, Texas. 

She was born in Roby, Texas on June 26, 1922 to Charlotte Erma Devenport Scott and David Edward Scott. 

On March 17, 1940, she married Linn McCleery in Oklahoma, then graduating from Holiday High School in May, 1940. Their union produced five children. Miriam had a full life. She lived in Alice where she worked at several cafeterias within the Alice Independent School District. She cooked for the Wednesday night suppers at First Baptist Church in Alice, and worked for over ten years at Whataburger. She was a member of the Eastern Star, Alice Chapter. 

She then moved to Utah where she received an Associate’s Degree in Elementary Education. She taught the Navajo children English as a second language. While taking her classes for extra credit, she became the oldest student, at age 56, to take a survival class that included repelling from a mountain, mountain climbing, hiking, and white water rapids. She moved back to Alice and worked at Jerry Smith’s Gallery, where she was well known as “Grannie”. She also had the opportunity to travel to Europe with her husband.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Linn J. McCleery; one sister, Doris Summers, one brother, David Edward Scott II; her son, Kenneth McCleery, a grandson, Lloyd Jenkins, and a granddaughter, Daina Powers.

Miriam will forever be in the hearts of her children, Sandra Kay Jenkins of Orange Grove, Linda Beth (Gary) Brownlow of Sandia, Charlotte Ellen (Jerald) Nesloney of Orange Grove, and Brenda Jean (Danny) Sikorski of Bryan, Texas; 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great grandchildren, and many lifetime friends.

Family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday May 29, 2017 at Holmgreen Mortuary in Alice.

Funeral Service will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at The Grove First Baptist Church in Orange Grove, Texas.

Interment will follow at Alice Cemetery.
