BENAVIDES - Oliver George "O.G." Barton, 81, was called home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, December 21, 2016. He was born in Benavides, Texas on May 5, 1935 to his parents, John Sampson and Luisa Allen Barton.
He was a graduate of Benavides High School and of St. Mary's University. He also held various Masters of Education Certificate. He was an educator all his life. He began his career as principal in Robstown, Texas. He continued enriching students lives for over 48 years in both San Diego and Alice ISD. O.G. was a devoted, loving and generous father, brother, uncle, grandfather and friend to all. He was an avid bird hunter who also enjoyed training dogs and tinkering in his work shed. He was highly skilled and crafty in carpentry. His voice and presence will be dearly and sadly missed be all his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Christian Hunter Morris; his sisters, Thelma B. (Fernando) Caballero, Emma G. Barton; his brothers, Richard Lee (Grace) Barton, Edward Barton, Frank S. (Elida) Barton.
O.G. is survived by his one son, Louis Anthony Barton (Jennifer Eve Mueller); two daughters, Nona Marie Barton ( George Gonzalez), and Tara Barton (Rogelio Gonzalez); five grandchildren, Elyssa Firenza Barton, Driskill Joaquin Alejandro Solis, Gerardo Joseph Monroy II, Mason Anthony Barton, Leah-Marie Perez, Juan M. "Cuatro" Benavides IV; one brother, John Sampson (Juanita) Barton Jr. of Benavides; one sister-in-law, Evengelina Everett Barton of Benavides, Texas; numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Monday, December 26, 2016 at the Garza Funeral Home in San Diego, Texas with a Rosary at 7 p.m. that evening. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, December 27, 2016 at St. Francis De Paula Catholic Church in San Diego, Texas. Interment will follow at the San Diego Cemetery in San Diego, Texas.
