Coastal Bend College - Alice Campus TRiO students from area high schools spent the day on campus. Sixty students from Orange Grove, Alice, Benavides and San Diego attended workshops to discuss financial aid and career opportunities. The theme was "Teaming Up for Success."

Alice Mayor Juan Rodriguez Jr. and City Manager Albert Uresti addressed the students, sharing their own experiences and encouraging students to work hard to achieve their dreams. The mayor proclaimed it TRiO Day.

Upward Bound, Educational Talent Search and Student Support Services are part of the federal trio of programs that assist students in getting into college and completing a bachelor's degree. Coastal Bend College works with thousands of high school and middle school students on college readiness.

TRiO Day workshop presenters were Alice Police Chief Daniel Bueno, Dr. John Perez of Texas A&M University - Kingsville, Alice Allen from College Tech Prep, Richard Sapp from College 101, and CBC instructors Becky Simonson, Karl Clark, John Adams and Dallas Baldwin. A counseling session for parents of college-bound students also was held.

Dr. Terisa Remelius, Vice President for Student Affairs at TAMUK, was guest speaker.

She engaged students in a discussion about setting and achieving personal goals. ETS students Lee Roy Chapa from San Diego and Tres Canales from Benavides were recognized for outstanding achievement.
