PREMONT - A house fire broke out on May 4 consuming most of the home located at 405 Southwest 9th Street.
The Premont Volunteer Fire Department responded to the fire at about 3 p.m. and had it contained within two hours, officials said. Fire departments from Alice with a crew of two and Falfurrias with a crew of four helped assist the PVFD. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
"We are not sure what started the fire," Fire Chief Jerry LaRue said. "We are still investigating it but suspect possible electrical causes. We got the call around 3 p.m. and had it cleared by around 5 p.m."
The home belonged to Tommy and Nancy Teague, who were not home at the time the fire broke out. The couple had just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary the previous weekend, officials said. The home was insured and the couple is currently staying with relatives.
The PVFD was able to utilize its new truck to help contain the fire. The department recently purchased the truck with funds from the county. The truck can hold 1,000 gallons of water and can carry five firemen.
