Alice High School juniors and seniors will have another opportunity to pass the exit level TAKS exam this week, as teachers and administrators prepare for four days of TAKS retesting.

AHS Dean of Instruction Marie Dickson could not give an exact number this week of the students who would be testing, but did say the number was " a lot."

Summer TAKS preparation courses ended in June, Dickson said, "and we had very good attendance. It was great."

The exit level TAKS exam is given to students their junior year. They have four opportunities to pass the exam, in October, February, April and July.

This year, 10 percent of AHS juniors did not meet standards on the TAKS reading test. In Math, 37 percent of student failed to meet standards, and in science nearly half, or 47 percent, did not meet standards on the test. Eighteen percent of students will be taking the TAKS social studies exam after failing to meet standards as well.

AHS seniors taking the test this week have had a total of seven opportunities to pass the exam since the beginning of their junior year.

There are 35 seniors this year who hope that the eighth time is the charm and they can become part of the Class of 2007.

Nineteen of the 35 students who failed to graduate during spring commencement was because of their TAKS scores; 19 also failed to graduate because of poor grades, school officials said.

AHS, with 12 percent of its seniors not passing one or more portions of the TAKS test, proved to do only slightly better than the state average of 16 percent, according to the Texas Education Agency, which reported a total of 40,182 seniors who did not pass the TAKS statewide.

Dickson said students can log on the TEA Web site, at www.tea.state.tx.us to take online practice tests, which will also help with test preparation.

Students should arrive at AHS by 7:30 a.m., with tests beginning promptly at 8 a.m. If students or parents have any questions concerning the retest, they can call the high school at 664-0126, ext. 802.
