A Jim Wells County grand jury has issued two indictments against a local man, after he shot at two Jim Wells County Sheriff's Deputies earlier this year.

According to records released by the 79th District Clerk's Office this week, Manuel Perales Jr. was indicted for two counts of criminal intent.

The indictments indicate that Perales was attempting to commit the offense of capital murder when he shot Deputy Mark Martinez and shot at Deputy Jason Childers on May 26.

The Jim Wells Sheriff's Department and several law enforcement agencies searched for Perales for eight hours after he fled the scene where Martinez was shot at about 11:45 p.m. May 26 in the 700 block of Lara Street in the Rancho Alegre area.

According to sheriff officials, Deputy Martinez was attempting to stop Perales for a traffic violation before the shooting occurred, but Perales refused to stop.

Deputy Martinez and Deputy Childers chased the vehicle Perales was driving, and that chase ended on Lara Drive, where gunshots were exchanged.

Martinez was shot once in the leg, and Perales was shot in the stomach before fleeing the scene.

Perales was eventually located in the area and was arrested.

According to court documents, Perales has a prior conviction in 1995 of theft over $750 under $20,000.

His bond has been set at $500,000.
