AGUA?DULCE?— An early morning accident sent one Agua Dulce man to the hospital after he pulled in front of an oncoming train.

Billy Bob Bedford, 22, is in stable condition at CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Alice with a severe left shoulder injury after he pulled up to the tracks near the intersection on County Road 103 and County Road 38 in Agua Dulce shortly before 8 a.m.

Bedford’s Dodge Ram pickup truck moved toward the tracks as an oncoming Kansas City Southern train approached the third intersection in town. Texas Department Of Public Safety Trooper Mark Morales said that the train had utilized its horn as it passed through the intersections, and that, Bedford pulled in front of the train. The train was heading east, from Laredo to Corpus Christi.

Morales said that crossing bars or lighting at the track intersection might have prevented the accident. “This is a very big blessing, as far as the way it ended,” Morales said. Bedford was taken straight from the scene to the hospital and investigators had yet to interview him concerning the accident. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
