Law enforcement agencies across the country will be celebrating with residents of their communities tonight during the annual National Night Out.
Locally, the Alice Police Department, the Alice Housing Authority, the Alice Fire Department and the Jim Wells County Sheriff's Department will host an event at the Police Department Sub-Station, located at 125 Olmito St.
Crime Prevention Officer Cpl. Margarito Perez said National Night Out is designed to increase crime and drug prevention awareness and to strengthen relationships in the community.
"I think this is important, because a lot of people live across from or beside each other for many years, and they never get to know their neighbors well enough to know their names," Perez said.
"It's good to get to know your neighbors, so you can have somebody to watch your house while you're gone and to help watch out for suspicious activity."
The Alice event will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

In San Diego, the Duval County Sheriff's Department and the San Diego Police Department are hosting an event at the Plaza Alcala.
That event will take place from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., and will include free hot dogs and drinks, fingerprinting for children, a DJ and several games.
For more information about the San Diego event, contact the Duval County Sheriff's Department at 279-3351.
