David Montano, third head coach and athletic director in the last three years, was relieved of his duties as athletic director so he can spend more time as an assistant principal at the high school, school officials said.
As of Tuesday, school officials had not appointed another athletic director.
"For academic reasons the superintendent said," said board member Carmela B. Garcia. "We needed him at the high school all the time."
During a school board meeting Monday, the board discussed the fate of athletic director/head coach David Montano and in open session, relieved him of his duties to concentrate only on his assistant principal position. Montano was assigned the extra duty of athletic director in August. The added responsibility came with a stipend in conjunction with his assistant principal pay. Montano could not be reached for comment on Tuesday.
Montano is a Donna native who came to the Coastal Bend as a student-athlete at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. For four seasons, Montano was a receiver for the university. He then stayed on with the university as a graduate assistant for seven years and a position coach. After that Montano spent the last two years as an assistant coach at H.M. King High School in Kingsville.
