A traffic stop by the Jim Wells County Task Force Thursday afternoon netted almost $50,000, Sgt. Albert Martinez with Alice police said.

Martinez said he stopped a Pontiac Grand Prix about 12:30 p.m. traveling south on Highway 281 Thursday. Martinez, along with his K-9 Sputnik, inspected the vehicle. Upon searching, $49,000 was located in the back seat hidden underneath a blue bag on the floorboard, police said. The money was double bagged in increments of twenty-dollar bills, police said.

The suspect, a Rio Grande native whose name is not being released, was headed to the Rio Grande Valley.

The Jim Wells County Task Force, which includes the APD and sheriff's department, continues the investigation, officials said.

"The interdiction between the Jim Wells County Sheriff's Department and Alice Police Department continue to meet the program's expectations," Police Chief Danny Bueno said.
