Five high school students were arrested Thursday afternoon for possession of marijuana after a violation traffic stop for no seatbelts, Department of Public Safety officials said.
DPS officials said the vehicle was pulled over about 4 p.m. on Highway 44, just before the bypass Highway 281 relief route for seatbelt violations.
As the vehicle came to a stop traveling westbound, the students threw a bag out of the window, trooper officials said.
Officials said the bag was recovered and contained marijuana.
The five students, two 14-year-olds, 18-year-old Arturo Ruiz, and 17-year-olds Robert Luera and Mark Garcia were arrested, officials said. Ruiz and Garcia played football for the Alice Coyotes this season.
The older trio were transported to the Jim Wells County jail and the 14 year olds were transported to Starr County to the Rio Grande City detention center.
All five were charged with possession of marijuana under two ounces, jail officials said.
DPS officials said alcohol was also found in the vehicle.
