The Jim Wells County Appraisal District Board of Directors completed its annual review of Chief Appraiser J. Sidney Vela Wednesday, citing his work as "satisfactory."

Vela was evaluated in 18 separate categories, and board chairman Charles Galindo said the board was pleased with his work.

"He was given a satisfactory evaluation," Galindo said. "Each of the board members is satisfied with his performance at this time."

Vela has been an employee of the district since 1981, and for the past 19 years has served as chief appraiser.

In other business, the board opened four bid proposals received from local banks for the Bank Depository Contract for 2008 and 2009. The four bids were the most received for the two-year contract, officials said.

Banks submitting bids included First Community Bank, IBC Bank, Prosperity Bank and Wells Fargo.

The board tabled action to select one of the banks until its next meeting, to allow board members time to review the four bids.

In a separate item, the board approved a contract for oil, gas, mineral, utility and industrial property valuation services with the firm Thomas Y. Pickett and Company for 2008 and 2009. The contract was renewed at the same rate for 2008, but will increase by 2.7 percent for 2009.

The board also received a report on delinquent tax collection from James A. Erck and authorized the advertisement of 12 resale properties currently held by local taxing units.
