Several people celebrated El Dia de los Tres Reyes, or Three Kings Day, at Mi Familia Adult Day Care Tuesday.

The celebration is in commemoration of the three wise men, Melchior, Gaspar and Baltazar, who according to the Bible, brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the infant Jesus. It takes place on Jan. 6, 12 days after Christmas. It is also known as the Feast of the Epiphany.

Mi Familia put on a large performance, with several clients dressed in biblical garb. There were three wise men, played by Alfonso Caudielo, Jesse Perez, and Reynaldo Rios. There was also Joseph and Mary, played by Marcos Charles and Esmeralda Gloria, and a shepherd who witnessed the event, played by Alex Arrellano. The angels of the performance were G.G. Gonzalez and Maria Gloria. Music to go along with the production was sung by Maria Del Carmen Rodriguez.

Along with the costumes and performance, organizers provided a large Christmas themed piñata, and one local visitor, Adela Espinosa, became the Peanut lady for the day, passing out peanuts as a snack to the visitors, in conjunction with the celebration.

Also present were several loafs of Rosca de Reyes (Three Kings bread), which is a ring shaped bread with a small doll of baby Jesus hidden inside.

According to the website inside-mexico.com, “the Baby is hidden because it symbolizes the need to find a secure place where Jesus could be born, a place where King Herod could not find him.”

Mi Familia Activity Director Elsa Ovalle said the holiday season just wouldn’t be complete without a celebration honoring the Three Kings.

“This is really an opportunity to provide a cultural experience that means a lot to our clients,” Ovalle said. “Dia De Reyes is a very important celebration in the Mexican and Spanish culture.”
